Stafford Beer

He took a science built from wartime mathematics, neurophysiology, and anthropology — and pointed it at the most ordinary thing in the world: how organizations run. Stafford Beer is the reason we can talk about a company the way we talk about a living body.

The Guardian called him a “world leader in the development of operational research, who combined management systems with cybernetics.” Professor Stafford Beer is best known for his work in Operational Research and Management Cybernetics — and, more than anyone, he is the reason we can speak about an organization the way we speak about a living body.

Cybernetics did not start with him. It began in the early 1940s, when a group of leading scientists from very different fields — biology, physics, chemistry, neurology, anthropology — found themselves circling the same question. We carve the world into these separate disciplines, they noticed; but is there something between the categories that we have no name for? Some shared structure running underneath all of them?

They found one, and they called it control. They began comparing what control meant in each of their fields — what it looks like in physics, in astrophysics, in neurology — searching for the common principles by which things, of any kind, stay in control. That search became cybernetics: the study of how people, animals, and machines control themselves and communicate information.

What Beer did, by the late 1950s, was take that science and aim it somewhere no one had: at management and organizational design. He was the first to treat a company as the kind of self-regulating system cybernetics describes — and out of that work came the Viable System Model, his lasting contribution and the framework most of this site is built on.
